Biography: Mark D. Houston

Mark D. Houston is a spiritual teacher, speaker, workshop facilitator and president of an alcohol and drug recovery center. After several years of transmitting his experience through tapes and workshops, he finally decided to put his experience into a book in the hopes that it would reach an even larger audience of like-minded people. The result is A Twelve-Step Journey to SELF Transformation (Attaining Physical, Mental, Spiritual, and Emotional Sobriety), co-authored with Floyd.

The book is drawn from the actual experiences of the two men and differs from other recovery books in that it is less exposition and is more of an experiential presentation. Also, its message is not limited only to a "stay physically sober" approach but offers a four-level, holistic approach that addresses all of the multi-faceted aspects of addiction in order to provide the entire treatment required.

The success experienced by Mark and Floyd when they used the holistic approach to address their own recovery needs led to Mark's vision of creating a center which would apply the principles of the holistic approach which is shared in the book.

Those principles became the philosophical foundation for a multi-facility recovery center, and Mark's vision became a reality in July of 2006 when the Mark Houston Recovery Center opened its doors.

Today, Mark continues to offer assistance to those living lives of quiet desperation and to people who suffer from addictions of all kinds (including alcoholics, drug addicts, family members, and others. Mark, sober since October 19, 1982, said:

"In 1991, I made an abrupt career change and was thrust into the world of substance abuse treatment. From 1991 until 2005 I worked for two outstanding residential treatment facilities located in Texas. One of those was a thirty-day residential treatment program for alcoholics and drug addicts and one was a long-term extended care program.

"Those two experiences convinced me of the need for an entirely new kind of recovery center which would be gender specific (males only); which would operate in a family-style setting; which would be recovery driven, not clinically driven; which would offer a program that addresses all four levels of intoxication and which can provide all four levels of sobriety; and which would have as its central themes both permanent sobriety and a life of abundance."
